Why Families Choose Wildwood for Kindergarten & Homeschool Enrichment
Choosing the right Kindergarten experience is a big decision. For some families, traditional school is the perfect fit. For others, they’re seeking something gentler, more flexible, more connected to nature, and more aligned with how young children truly learn.
At Wildwood Park Discovery School, we’ve created a Kindergarten and homeschool enrichment experience that feels less like a classroom—and more like a childhood worth remembering.
Families Choose Wildwood Because We Offer…
🌿 A Gentle Alternative to Traditional Kindergarten
Not every five-year-old thrives in a desk-based, highly structured academic environment.
Wildwood offers a developmentally respectful approach that balances gentle academics with movement, creativity, nature, hands-on discovery, and social-emotional growth.
Children learn foundational skills without sacrificing wonder, imagination, or the joy of childhood.
🏡 Small Group, Family-Style Learning
Large classrooms can feel overwhelming for some children.
At Wildwood, our intentionally small group environment allows children to feel seen, known, and supported.
With an average daily group size of just 5–8 children, children build close friendships, receive individualized guidance, and learn in a warm, nurturing setting that feels like an extension of home.

A Gentle, Whole-Child Approach to Early Learning
At Wildwood Park Discovery School, our Kindergarten program is thoughtfully designed to nurture the whole child—mind, body, heart, and imagination.
Rooted in a blended Charlotte Mason and Waldorf-inspired philosophy, our program offers a warm, nature-rich environment where children develop confidence, curiosity, creativity, and foundational academic readiness through meaningful, hands-on experiences.
We believe early childhood should be a time of wonder—not pressure. Children learn best when they feel safe, inspired, and deeply connected to the world around them.
Our Kindergarten program gently introduces more structured learning while honoring each child’s developmental pace, natural attention span, and need for movement, play, and exploration.
Our Educational Philosophy
Our approach combines the strengths of two beloved educational philosophies:
Charlotte Mason Inspired
Charlotte Mason believed children are whole people deserving of rich ideas, beautiful language, and meaningful learning experiences. Her philosophy emphasizes:
-
Short, focused lessons that respect natural attention spans
-
Living books, storytelling, poetry, and beautiful language
-
Habit formation, responsibility, kindness, and self-discipline
-
Nature study and real-world observation
-
Practical life skills and hands-on learning
Waldorf Inspired
Waldorf education focuses on imaginative, experiential learning that nurtures emotional, physical, and intellectual development through:
-
Play-based learning and creativity
-
Daily rhythms and predictable routines
-
Nature immersion and seasonal learning
-
Art, music, movement, storytelling, and handcrafts
-
Delaying academic pressure until children are developmentally ready
Our Wildwood Blend
By blending these philosophies, Wildwood creates a Kindergarten experience that is both nurturing and enriching.
Our program emphasizes:
🌿 Nature-Centered Learning
-
Daily outdoor exploration, gardening, weather observation, and seasonal rhythms
🎨 Creative Expression
-
Watercolor painting, storytelling, music, movement, sensory play, clay, nature crafts, and imaginative play
📚 Gentle Academic Readiness
-
Short, engaging academic lessons introducing early literacy, phonics, handwriting, math foundations, and critical thinking in developmentally appropriate ways
🧺 Practical Life Skills
-
Cooking, gardening, animal care, responsibility, independence, and meaningful daily tasks
❤️ Social-Emotional Growth
-
Empathy, friendship building, communication, emotional awareness, self-confidence, and kindness
Our Kindergarten Learning Experience
Unlike traditional academic kindergarten programs, Wildwood offers a balanced hybrid between enrichment and gentle academics.
Children participate in short, focused learning blocks woven naturally throughout the day alongside movement, creative play, and outdoor discovery.
A typical Wildwood Kindergarten day may include:
-
Morning rhythm & gratitude practice
-
Circle time, songs, poetry, and storytelling
-
Early reading & phonics exploration
-
Gentle math through real-life activities
-
Nature study & life science
-
STEM-inspired hands-on discovery
-
Practical life projects (gardening, cooking, caring for animals)
-
Art, handcrafts, music, and imaginative play
-
Outdoor adventure and movement
-
Social learning and collaborative play
Life Cycle & Nature-Based Learning
A defining part of our curriculum is our Life Cycle–based thematic learning.
Children explore the natural world through immersive monthly themes such as:
-
Bees & pollination
-
Butterflies & metamorphosis
-
Seeds, roots & plant growth
-
Chickens & life cycles
-
Weather & seasonal changes
-
Pond life & tadpoles
-
Habitats, ecosystems, and nature observation
Children learn by doing—planting, observing, experimenting, creating, questioning, and exploring.
STEM the Wildwood Way
At Wildwood, STEM is introduced through meaningful real-world experiences—not worksheets or screen-based instruction.
Children explore:
Science:
-
Gardening, life cycles, weather, animal care, cooking experiments, observation
Engineering:
-
Building with natural materials, designing structures, problem-solving, experimentation
Math:
-
Counting, sorting, measuring, sequencing, patterns, quantities, comparisons
Technology:
-
Real-world tools like kitchen tools, gardening tools, and creative building materials
Small Group, Big Connection
We intentionally keep our group sizes small to create meaningful relationships and individualized support.
-
Mixed-age learning environment
-
Average daily group size: 5–8 children
-
Maximum group size: 12 children
-
Supportive teacher-to-child ratios that allow for individualized guidance
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Because nature is one of our greatest teachers, children spend significant time outdoors year-round (rain or shine with appropriate school provided gear).
Our program may include:
-
Nature walks & park adventures
-
Gardening projects
-
Animal care experiences
-
Seasonal exploration
-
Outdoor movement & gross motor development
-
Local field trips when appropriate

Growing strong roots today for tomorrow’s leaders.

Kindergarten Program Prerequisites
To help ensure a successful, positive experience for every child in our Kindergarten program, we do have a few important readiness requirements.
Age Requirements
Children enrolling in our Kindergarten program must:
-
Be 5 years old on or before September 15th
-
Not turn 7 years old before June 18th of the enrolled school year
Our Kindergarten program is intentionally designed for children within this developmental age range to ensure age-appropriate learning, social experiences, and group cohesion.
Toilet Independence
Because our Kindergarten program is designed to support growing independence and active participation throughout the day—including outdoor adventures, field trips, group projects, and learning experiences—we require enrolled Kindergarten students to be fully toilet independent.
Kindergarten students should be able to independently:
-
Recognize when they need to use the bathroom
-
Verbally communicate their bathroom needs
-
Enter and use the bathroom independently
-
Manage clothing appropriately
-
Wipe effectively and hygienically
-
Flush the toilet
-
Wash hands thoroughly and independently
-
Return to the group with minimal to no assistance
We ask that children be daytime accident-free for a minimum of 6 weeks prior to their first day of attendance.
We completely understand that:
-
Nighttime potty support is still developmentally normal for many children
-
The occasional rare accident can happen, even with fully trained children
However, if a child is still experiencing frequent daytime accidents or requires ongoing adult assistance with toileting routines, our Kindergarten program may not be the best fit quite yet.
Individual Considerations
We understand that every child develops at their own pace.
In some situations, we may consider reasonable accommodations or individual discussions regarding bathroom independence depending on the child's specific needs, developmental readiness, and whether appropriate support can be safely and realistically provided within our program environment.
Our goal is always to set children up for confidence, success, dignity, and independence—not frustration or unnecessary stress.
Our Philosophy on Readiness
Kindergarten readiness is about much more than academics.
At Wildwood, readiness means a child is developmentally prepared to participate in the rhythm of the day with increasing independence, confidence, social engagement, and self-care skills.
We believe children thrive best when placed in environments that genuinely match their readiness—not simply their age.
